What Lenders Check Before Approving Your Loan

Behind the "instant approval" screen is a checklist. Knowing it helps you apply once and apply well.

What Lenders Check Before Approving Your Loan

Digital lending feels instant, but the decision still runs through a defined set of checks. Most of them you can prepare for.

Identity and KYC

PAN and Aadhaar are verified against government databases, and your name, date of birth and address must match across documents. Mismatches are the most common cause of avoidable rejections.

Credit bureau report

The lender pulls your score and full report — open loans, repayment track record, recent enquiries, and any settlements or write-offs. A "settled" status on a past loan is a red flag even years later.

Income and obligations

Bank statements or salary slips establish income, and the lender calculates your fixed-obligations-to-income ratio — existing EMIs plus the proposed one, divided by monthly income. Lower is better.

Stability signals

  • Time at current employer and in current city.
  • Consistency of salary credits in your bank statement.
  • Whether your existing accounts show a pattern of cheque bounces or auto-debit failures.

Apply where you are likely to qualify rather than spreading applications across many lenders at once — each hard enquiry is recorded and a cluster reduces your score.
